Room 226, Monday late afternoon/evening

With no classes this week, Wyatt had made the most of the day by sleeping late. When he finally got up, he realized his cell phone had died who-knows-when and plugged it in to charge. Retrieving a message that was a few days old, he called Savannah. The door was open now as he waited for her to drop by.

As soon as she was finished cleaning and looking at a few things on the internet, Savannah cheerfully made her way down the hall to Wyatt's room and tapped on the door frame.

"Hey, kiddo, come on in," Wyatt said.

"Hey," she said with a smile as she came in. "How are things?"

"Pretty good, how about yourself?" Wyatt asked, pushing his chair away from his desk and beckoning for Savannah to sit on the bed.

Savannah went over and sat on the bed. "I've been thinking about things a lot lately, though."

"Such as?" Wyatt prompted, wondering what rhymed with "virginity" to make a spell.

"Sex, mostly," she said honestly.

"You're too young," Wyatt said automatically.

"I'm sixteen.," she pointed out. "Most people my age have already been having sex."

"That's not a good reason," Wyatt said. "If everybody jumped off a bridge, would you do it?" He mentally facepalmed. God, he sounded like his grandfather.

"If Chris told you he was thinking about having sex, you'd be encouraging him." She shook her head. "I'm not thinking about sex with everyone who jumps off of a bridge, Wyatt. Just with Johnny."

"That's different!" Wyatt said. "Chris is a guy. You're a girl." Because that made total sense to him.

She gave him a look. "And why does that make a difference?"

"Because . . . because!" Wyatt said, throwing his hands up.

Savannah pulled her legs up under her and made herself comfortable. She had a feeling it could take Wyatt awhile to come up with a sensible explanation.

"So, what you're telling me is that it's okay for your brother to have sex, but not your baby sister?"

She had stopped adding the adopted part when referring to Wyatt as her big brother a long time ago because it sounded silly to her. Family was family... and Wyatt was her big brother as far as she was concerned.

"Yes," Wyatt said firmly. "Because a lot of guys are just after sex, and once they get it, they'll dump you and break your heart."

She thought that argument sounded silly.

"So you think that after I have sex with Johnny he'll break my heart by dumping me?"

"He could!" Wyatt said. "He definitely acts like he's the type to do that." He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. "Do you love him?"

"You make it sound like guys see a girl's virginity as some sort of challenge, Wyatt." She sighed, and looked at him. "Yeah. But would it matter if I didn't? Isn't sex mostly about self-gratification?"

"Well, sometimes," Wyatt admitted, because he'd done his share of that. "But girls tend to put a lot more emotion into it than guys."

"Would it make you feel better for my heart if I told you that Johnny hadn't even brought it up once with me?"

The fact that she worried he missed it was something she wasn't going to mention to Wyatt. He might get the wrong idea.

Wyatt blinked. "He hasn't?" he said.

Savannah shook her head. "Nope. We've made out, but he's always been very careful about how far he goes with me and he has never even tried to convince me to have sex with him. Kid gloves, Wyatt."

"He'd better," Wyatt grumbled. "He knows he'll get his ass kicked if he hurts you."

"It's nice that you want to protect me, Wyatt."

"You're like my little sister, Savannah," Wyatt said. "Being protective comes with the territory."

She gave him a bright smile. "Does this mean I shouldn't come and talk to you about certain things?"

"No," Wyatt said. "But it does mean that I'm going to try to talk you out of doing anything foolish."

"I can deal with that." So far, he hadn't argued with her on the whole sex thing, nor had he given her a sensible reason why it was okay for guys but not girls.

"So, yeah," Wyatt said. "Make sure that this is something that you really really want, and that you're sure you want it to be with him. And that he's not going to use you. And, um, go to the clinic and get protection."

"I've been on protection since I was thirteen."

She shook her head, looking away. "Precaution."

"Against what?" Wyatt said. "Thirteen-year-olds shouldn't be thinking about stuff like that."

Yeah, she so wasn't going into her worry and paranoia.

"Uhm, Wyatt? It also helps regulate certain things."

She was pretty sure that like any male, he wouldn't delve into that subject.

And she'd be right. "What? Oh, right," Wyatt said hastily. "Well -- use backup. Just in case. Because you don't know where he's been."

"Any advice besides that?"

"What kind of advise do you want?" Wyatt said. Because if she was looking for any sort of tips, oh no, he was not going there.

"What do guys like? I mean, you've probably had experience. What do you like?"

She was completely oblivious of why this might make her big brother flail.

And flail he did. "Savannah, shouldn't you be talking to a girl about this?" he said.

Savannah tilted her head. "I guess I can. I just thought you would rather I talked to you about what I was thinking of doing."

"Yes, but. . . ." Flail. "A girl could probably tell you better how to go about things."

"A girl can't tell me what feels good from a guys position," Savannah pointed out. "But... if you're too scared to talk to me about it, I can talk to someone else."

"I'm not scared!" Wyatt said indignantly.

"Then why are you acting all weird?!" She demanded.

"Because you want to have sex!" Wyatt said.

This time it was Savannah trying not to flail.

"Why does that make you weird? Lots of people have sex."

"Lots of people aren't like my little sister," Wyatt said. "I can't tell my little sister what I like about sex."
