Campgrounds, Saturday evening

Wyatt had come out to the campgrounds while it was still light out to set things up. Now as night fell he had a nice fire going to ward off the chill of the fall night air, and a blanket stretched out on the ground beside it, along with a picnic basket of food -- including marshmallows, of course. The sky was clear, the moon was just a sliver, and the stars were bright overhead. Perfect.

Now all he needed was a girlfriend.

"What's wrong with cold?" she asked, letting herself be led. "It just means you have to bring another blanket. And maybe snuggle a bit to keep warm."

"Point," Wyatt said. "But since I was raised in California, I'd need a lot of snuggling to keep warm. Not that that's a bad thing."

"No, it's not," Isabel grinned as she took a seat on the blanket. "It could be entertaining even. Although it might distract from why we'd be out there in the first place."

Wyatt chuckled. "Unless we were doing something important, like some kind of stake out, then it would be bad. And good, too." He reached for the picnic basket and pulled it in front of them as he settled down beside Isabel. Inside, beside the marshmallows, was takeout from Ching Tai.

"No stakeouts. This would be more fun," she promised. "There are three different meteor showers before the year. We're going to have to see at least one of them."

The take-out boxes were pretty unmistakable. "Oh awesome. You thought of everything."

Wyatt smiled sheepishly. "I would've brought something that wasn't take-out, but I didn't inherit my mom's ability to cook," he said, pulling out a bottle of sparkling apple cider and two wine glasses.

"This is fine. I'll cook next week," Isabel said as she opened some of the containers. "I promised you lasagna didn't I? And that is non-alcoholic right?"

"Sparkling cider," Wyatt said, pouring some into the glasses and handing one to Isabel. "No alcohol, I promise. And yes, you promised lasagna. My mouth is watering already."

"Good. I wouldn't want to see the night end before it's really even started," she said sheepishly as she took the glass. "And me as a drunken idiot would pretty much do that. "

"No fear of that," Wyatt said, retrieving plates and utensils from the basket. "No way would I want things to end early."

"Me neither," Isabel smiled. "The thought of a nice evening was the only thing that kept me going today while I was trying to write my essay."

"Glad I could inspire," Wyatt said. "What were you writing about?"

She rolled her eyes and sighed. "I was attempting to write an essay about a person that had a significant impact on my life. Do you know what it's like to write that without getting into the weirdness?"

"They'd probably think you were crazy," Wyatt laughed.

"Yes, but since I'm not sure they have padded rooms in the dorms? I'd better make sure I sound just like any other normal college student," Isabel replied. "Which is pretty damn boring when you think about it."

"My 11th grade teacher, Mr. Smith, taught me the value of literature," Wyatt recited solemnly. "I wasn't much of a reader before his class, but his words inspired me to read more books, which opened up a whole new world for me."

"Oh you're good," she laughed, toasting him with her glass. "Very, very good. I started writing about my parents. And how they adopted Max and I, because really, when I consider how we could have wound up, they did have a significant impact on my life."

"That's a good topic," Wyatt said. "If I had to do something similar I'd probably write about my grandfather for much the same reasons."

"You might have to. It's a pretty standard question," Isabel pointed out. "Have you thought about where to apply to? I'm working on the application for Cornell."

"Not really," Wyatt admitted. "Grandpa would probably want me to go somewhere in California, but if I stay out on the East Coast I can keep an eye on Chris better." There would also apparently be other advantages. . . .

"Because it takes that much longer to orb from California if you're need?" she teased, setting aside her glass and reaching for an egg roll.

"True," Wyatt chuckled, scooping some food on his plate. "It makes getting to places a hell of a lot easier. Coolest power ever."

"It's useful. Especially when you're too tall for airline seats. Which is pretty much anyone older then eleven."

Isabel doused the eggroll in hot mustard and duck sauce then took a bit. "Mmm...so good."

Wyatt caught himself staring at the way Isabel slid the eggroll between her lips and quickly looked down at his own plate of crab rangoon and Kung Pao chicken. "So what do you like about Cornell?" he asked.

"It's School of Hotel Administration is the best," she explained, in between nibbles of egg roll. "So I think a degree from there will give me a good basis for what I want to do career-wise."
